TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY - NEW YORK MAGAZINE: Lauren Ambrose Stays Mum on Funny Girl, But Compares Herself to Carrot Top and Talks Torchwood

8/5/11
By: Gwynne Watkins

Though she's worked steadily since the end of Six Feet Under — a half-dozen indie films, two acclaimed Broadway shows, one failed network sitcom — Lauren Ambrose is still best remembered as HBO's soul-searching teen Claire Fisher. Now 33, the redhead is redefining herself in some unexpected ways. Currently, she's playing Torchwood: Miracle Day's amoral publicist Jilly Kitzinger, as seductive a villainesss as has ever wore designer heels. She has a supporting role in the upcoming David Wain comedy Wanderlust. And it was just announced that she'll be taking her little-heard, classically trained singing voice to Broadway, as Fanny Brice in the fall revival of Funny Girl. Though she declined to discuss the latter when we pressed her about the rumor (it was still under wraps when we interviewed her late last week), Ambrose talked to Vulture about her first foray into sci-fi, her obsession with Welsh accents, and why doing Wanderlust made her feel like the hippie Carrot Top...

... Q: So what made you choose this project, if you hadn't seen the show?

Lauren Ambrose: "I spoke to [creator and producer] Russell Davies about it, and I just enjoyed speaking to him so thoroughly. He's so smart and Welsh and talked in his very fast tongue — absolutely a million words a minute — about this world he created. And what was most appealing was that there is truly a reason for everything. Every detail has been considered. Obviously, there's this unnatural phenomenon where people stop dying all over the world, and he explores the repercussions of an event like that. My character represents the people who would sell it and profit off of it. She's in publicity; it's kind of been a meta, weird trip, to do interviews about the character, knowing that some publicist somewhere set it up..." [Laughs.]

TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY - WALL STREET JOURNAL BLOG SPEAKEASY: Eve Myles and Alexa Havins Talk about Stepping Up for ‘Torchwood’

August 4, 2011
By Dennis Nishi

There’s no shortage of strong women on STARZ’ new “Torchwood: Miracle Day” series. The new show is a continuation of the BBC series and is now set in the U.S. where Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) and Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), the last living members of Torchwood, are on the run with CIA analyst Esther Drummond, played by Alexa Havins. Speakeasy spoke with Myles and Havins about what they did to prepare for their new roles...

... Q: The first few shows have been so frantic. Is the pace going to level off?

Myles: "You haven’t seen anything yet. It ramps up a hundred percent. Once you get to episode five, in particular it starts to unravel and unravel so fast. And there’s so much to take in. It just goes crazy the closer you get to finding out what’s going on. You will not be able to breathe."

Havins: "And just when you think it’s a plateau, no, no, no."

Myles: "That’s what Russell [Davies] does, you see. I see exactly where this is going, it’s so simple. He will then drop you like a ton of bricks and start going in the other direction. This series is about expecting the unexpected..."

... Question: I was wondering what you thought of the new season of Torchwood. I've actually been very disappointed. I knew it would be hard to top the brilliance of Children of Earth, but so far, Miracle Day doesn't even come close. Although the charming Jack and the kickass Gwen are still awesome, I can't stand any of the other characters. They are all tedious and/or annoying. And where is the witty dialogue from previous seasons of Torchwood? Anyway, since you are able to see future episodes before the general public, I'd like to ask you: Does it get better? — Camille

Matt Roush: I've only seen through this upcoming Friday's fifth episode, which builds to an awfully grim (though for me, not terribly surprising) reveal, and I'm afraid at this point I can't disagree with your assessment. The season's fantastic premise — a world in which no one can die, except the immortal Capt. Jack — still strikes me as an audacious one, but they haven't made the most of it. Seems like they're telling more than showing when it comes to the mass hysteria in the world at large, and as creepy as his performance is, Bill Pullman's serial killer-turned-messiah doesn't make a lot of sense. It's taking too long for the "big bad" behind it all to reveal itself, because I can't believe Torchwood is really going up against evil pharmaceuticals in a health-care scheme. (This Friday's reveal indicates something much larger and uglier is afoot.) Completely agree that the American counterparts are either bland (Esther) or irritating (Rex), and I'm not sure what to make of Lauren Ambrose's giddy Jilly. But we're only halfway through the story, so I'm not giving up hope altogether yet. It does seem clear, though, that doubling the length of the incredible Children of Earth may not have been the best idea.

TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY - FLICKCAST: SDCC11 Exclusive Interview: Bill Pullman Talks ‘Torchwood’, His ‘Independence Day’ Speech

by Matt Raub
Jul 29 2011

Bill Pullman is one of those famed actors who’s resume has some of the weirdest stuff you’ll ever see on it. From playing the lead in a Mel Brooks spoof about Star Wars, to the troop-rallying president in Michael Bay’s Independence Day, and even to the child-killing death row inmate in Torchwood: Miracle Day, it seems like no role can disinterest the man.

Pullman joined the cast of Torchwood this season as they finally make their way to American soil and debut on Starz with Miracle Day. This time, he’s neither a wise-cracking hero nor the flag-waving veteran. This time he’s a stone cold killer...
