ALPHAS - METRO: Azita Ghanizada: Not your normal super hero

Afghan-American actress Azita Ghanizada has been a TV lover all her life — and in fact says it’s how she learned English. So the success of her new Syfy series, “Alphas,” has been especially rewarding for her. In the series, Ghanizada plays Rachel, a member of a team individuals with special abilities. (Rachel can heighten individual senses at the expense of others.) Metro caught up with Ghanizada to talk about working with her heroes, the new series’ impassioned fans and staying away from fan fiction...



... Metro: In tonight’s episode, you also get to work with guest-star Lindsay Wagner.

Azita Ghanizada: "I got to talk at length with her about what it was like to be a female TV star in the 70s on “The Bionic Woman” and breaking that ground, and she was just so cool. And then when we’re shooting, I went to do my super-hearing, and she just smirked a little bit. She’s like, “I used to be you.” I was like, “Oh my God, right!” — I mean, way cooler. She was a badass. Rachel’s growing into that. But what an iconic moment for me for someone who really shifted television for women in the 70s, and she sort of pointed at me and was like, “Rachel is sort of who I was.” So that was a really big treat..."

ALPHAS - THE WASHINGTON TIMES: He's not autistic, but he plays one on TV: Ryan Cartwright on Syfy's Alphas

About halfway through the second episode of Syfy's new series "Alphas," Dr. Lee Rosen, played by David Strathairn, says, "[His] ability is an integral part of him, as is the color of a person's skin or you being left handed. You can't extract that."

Rosen is referring to a character with special neurological abilities and is basically talking about neurodiversity, but taken to the nth power.

"Alphas" is a science fiction series focused on exploring people whose neurological anomalies give them special powers—super strength or the ability to hyper-intensify one sense at a time, for example—at the same time that they deal with the deficits and difficulties brought on by their differences. These people are the titular Alphas.

It is fitting then, that one of the show's five main Alphas is Gary Bell, an autistic adult who can read a wide range of electromagnetic frequencies, including television, radio and cell phone signals. The inclusion of an autistic character brings an interesting layer of neurodiverse reality to a show almost entirely made of fantasy...



... Gary, as played by actor Ryan Cartwright, is described on the show as a "high functioning autistic." Cartwright sees him as more complex than just his diagnosis and says, "I like that he has a voice, an attitude and a developing sense of humor. He's an innocent in certain ways, which makes him endearing, but he's also finding himself in a position of great appreciation and admiration for the first time in his life, so he's strutting a little."

Naturally, the autism community carefully watches portrayals of autistic characters on television, something the show's creators seem to be aware of. "Everyone involved in the show is taking great pains to be sensitive to the autistic community," says Cartwright...

Remember once upon a time in the mid 1990′s when Black Hollywood ruled the T.V. airwaves on Thursday nights? After a visit with the Huxtables on the “Cosby Show” and a lesson in higher learning at Hillman College on “A Different World”, over 15 million viewers would tune in at 9:00 P.M. for their weekly fix of “New York Undercover.” Malik Yoba became an overnight sensation in his role as J.C. Williams, a street smart police detective and loving father to his 11 year old son. Since then Yoba has remained a fixture on the pop culture radar, from his role as Jamaican bobsledder Yul Brenner in Cool Runnings to loving hubby Gavin in Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married 1 & 2. Yoba has also kept busy by producing and directing his own web series “Shop Talk” on BET.com.

In his latest role on the hit Syfy series “Alphas” Yoba has been elevated to superhero status–literally. He plays Bill Harken, a former FBI detective with the special ability of “fight or flight.” The Urban Daily caught up with Yoba to discuss his new love for Twitter, his surreal experience working with Janet Jackson, which black superhero he’d like to play on the big screen and why we need to stop whining about the lack of quality black programming on television...



... Q: Congratulations on “Alphas”—it was the most watched series debut on Syfy in 2 yrs. Why do you think the show has been successful?

Malik Yoba: "I think the folks at Syfy are really smart. It’s very enjoyable to be a part of the show–the cast is just great. It’s a network that really seems to understand its core audience and how to appeal to them."

Q: There’s a lot of support for the show on Twitter. How do you like being on Twitter?

Malik Yoba: "I’m actually on Twitter right now. I’m usually on there through my phone, but up in Canada I’ve been off the grid because my U.S. phone isn’t working. So I have my computer on all the time in my trailer. I’ve never seen Twitter as effective as I did in the last few weeks. People have taken ownership of the show. When people reach out to me, I respond to them and engage with them in a very real way. When you engage with people as an artist you know exactly what they feel and what they’re thinking. We live in a different time so I just think it’s amazing..."

ALPHAS - BOSTON HERALD: Yoba drawn to strengths of Syfy’s ‘Alphas’

When Malik Yoba heard about “Alphas,” he didn’t want any part of it.

The New York native had just finished filming “Defying Gravity,” which was his 10th TV series. “I was more interested in doing my own thing,” Yoba told the Herald from the show’s Toronto set. “I was very concerned that the show would be squandered.”

He changed his mind after talking with Syfy representatives and Jack Bender (“Lost”), who directed the pilot. “There are a lot of reasons why things work and don’t work. I think Syfy really understands its audience. They really understand how to mass-market something. I think they did an incredible job at getting the word out on our show.”

In the series (tonight at 10), Yoba stars as Bill Harken, an ex-FBI agent who has superhuman strength. “I just think the episodes get better and better,” he said. “The relationships are going to get stronger. I just got handed the script for episode 10, which is a crazy cliffhanger. People might even cry at the end of the episode...”
